Craft that tell their story – San Cristóbal de las Casas Project

Designated a Creative City of Craft and Folk Art in 2015, San Cristóbal de Las Casas is a city located in the Chiapas region of Southern Mexico. In collaboration with ITKI-US, Collective TORATH A.C. and Folklore, the Creative City of San Cristóbal de Las Casas is undertaking a new project utilizing the Creative Knowledge Platform to fulfill the Sustainable Development Goals of the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable development.

The project “Crafts that Tell their Story” aims to document the local traditions of the region, protecting their unique knowledge and promoting their crafts through a publicly accessible digital database (“Creative Knowledge Platform”) and Cultural Centers of Creative and Traditional Knowledge (“Casas de Barrio”). This plan is organized into 4 phases, the first of which is already underway.

Phase one involves researching and documenting the cultural assets of the 10 barrios that make up the city, collecting from each a unique dish or ingredient, a site of cultural importance and a unique craft of the region. The results of this project will be presented in Fabriano, Italy at the XIII UCCN Annual Meeting in 2019 as well as in a published book.

If you are an artisan from San Cristóbal, we highly encourage you to participate in the project. Please email us at colectivotorarhac@gmail.com for questions and additional information.
